About Mike Klein

I am a Copenhagen-based communications professional with two main streams of professional experience–internal and political communication–combining to provide solutions that are innovative, hard-hitting and effective.

A Committed Communicator

Since 1997, I’ve focused mainly on internal or “enterprise” communication.  I currently work with VimpelCom, a leading global mobile operator, and have also worked with Maersk, Shell, easyJet, Omnicom (Smythe Dorward Lambert and Omnicom Europe), Barclays, Reuters, Cable & Wireless, Cargill and the US Department of Transportation.  Along with my distinctive approach to Social Communication, I’ve developed strengths in Merger and Acquisitions, IT change communication, research and feedback, understanding organizational networks and tribes, and in auditing communication activities and behaviors.

I’ve also been an industry activist–a co-founder of the trail-blazing CommScrum network that has been challenging status quo business communication practices, a holder of numerous local and regional IABC positions, and am also a member of the European Association of Communication Directors.

My Previous Life

Prior to 1997, I was a political organizer, manager and strategist.  I consulted to statewide campaigns in Alabama, worked with the Riverboat Casino Association in Louisiana, organized convention campaigns in major membership associations, crafted public affairs and online grassroots lobbying campaigns for a major national Jewish organization and designed and published direct mail for state legislators in Baltimore.  These political experiences inform my corporate communications activities greatly–as people who vote tend also to be people who work-the same people with the same hopes, fears and prejudices.

The Tribes I Belong To

As a believer in tribalism as a core communicating and organizing principle, here are some of my non-professional affiliations:

London Business School–MBA Graduate

University of Wisconsin–BA Graduate

Tottenham Hotspur Football Club–supporter since 1996

Chicago Cubs, White Sox, Bulls and Bears–Lifelong Fan

Democrats Abroad–Political and Social Club

The Godfather (1+2)–Favorite Film

Starbucks–Favorite Filter Coffee

I also enjoy European Travel, Belgian Beer, German Techno and Turkish cuisine.

  1. I am highly impressed by your latest post on the stockholm accords. Behind the jargon and the polemics which it has raised..you are not (fortunately for me!) the only one, but you certainly captured more than anyone else its essence. Would like to correspond. Possible?

D’accord. The Accords are what the profession wants to make of them.
